The books of the Bible are arranged as collections of related writings, and are not always in chronological order.

In order to read the story chronologically, you would read the books in the following order: (This is the listing of the Books of the Old Testament, which records history from God’s perspective before Jesus’ birth.)

Genesis
Exodus
Numbers
Joshua
Judges
I Samuel
II Samuel
I Kings
II Kings
Ezra
Nehemiah

Some of these books repeat elements that also exist in others, but this is the general story.
I & II Chronicles are a synoptic recap of the entire story from Genesis through II Kings.

Books not included in this list:
Leviticus – Detailed legal document listing the laws that the Nation of Israel was to be governed by.
Deuteronomy – The name means “second telling.” It is a reiteration of the agreement between God and the Nation of Israel. It may well be called the Constitution for the Nation.
Ruth – The story of a family during the time of the Judges. The story also explains how Ruth, not an Israelite from birth, came to be a part of Jesus’ genealogy.
Esther – The story of Queen Esther which occurs during the time Israel was exiled in Babylon. It would fit into the same time frame as the books of Ezra an Nehemiah.
Job – Is sometimes included in the collection of the books of poetry described below. Is is probably the most ancient story in the Bible, and would fit somewhere within the book of Genesis.

Collections of Books:
Poetry : These books are a collection of songs, and proverbs written during the time of King David and King Solomon
Psalms
Proverbs

Prophets: These are prophecies recorded as messages, usually addressed to the kings ruling the Nation of Israel. The chronology of the kings is recorded in I & II Kings. Often the prophet is identified as writing during the reign of a certain king, and sometimes even the specific year of the king’s reign is identified.
In addition, the prophets also prophecy about the coming of The Messiah (The Great Deliverer, Savior, and Redeemer) anticipated from the promise God gave as early as Genesis 3:15. The New Testament declares Jesus as the Messiah.
