The promise made to Abraham and the law given at Sinai now meet the ground. Israel enters the land, struggles to hold it, asks for a king, and receives one — and the story becomes the long, honest account of a people learning that God keeps His word even when they do not.

These books are history, but they are not neutral history. They are told so that we would see something: that God is faithful, that leadership matters, and that the human heart drifts. Read them for the story, and read them for the mirror.
