Nothing is known about Malachi except what is contained in this
prophecy. He was probably a contemporary of Nehemiah, because his
prophecy best describes that period.
One of the interesting aspects of this prophecy is the dialogue between
Jehovah and His people. There is a constant contrast of “you say” vs.
“thus says the Lord, Jehovah.”
This closing book of the Old Testament graphically portrays the closing
period of Old Testament history, and speaks to the changes needed to
prepare the way for the coming of Messiah. The beginning of the book
looks at the sins of the people, and the dishonesty of the leadership of
the people, and is then contrasted with the blessings that will come at
the coming of Messiah.
